Cabins in the woods

Fiona Fawcett

we spent a few days around Keswick after the busy trip to London for Top Drawer, where I found so many cabins in the woods. Little obsessions of mine are wooden log cabins, shapes of trees, scenery and skylines. Frosty walks and crisp mornings.

lots of inspiration for little sketches and new ideas!

Renegade Craft Fair

Fiona Fawcett

at the beginning of the month we had a lovely little stall at Renegade!

renegade craft fair is 'a highly curated showcase of the very best in modern craft and design'. originating in the US, the largest independent craft show attracts over 300K+ visitors and makes it's only stop outside of america in London. we've followed the renegade instagram feed and watched other ace creatives exhibit here over the past couple of years and this year we thought was the year for us... although logistically it's a bit of a trip down from Yorkshire with all our Christmassy stock in tow, it proved to be a brilliant show and we are already super excited about next year!

renegade takes place in the old truman brewery on brick lane, a wonderfully industrial building - perfect for this type of show with plenty of space and exposed white brick walls. below are a few of our favourite makers that we discovered over the weekend and had the pleasure of exhibiting alongside:

Manchester Print Fair / Design MCR

Fiona Fawcett

Manchester Print Fair is an independent design event, celebrating the best design, arts and photography in the North West.

To celebrate their 5th birthday, the fair moved to a fabulous new venue; London Road Fire Station where we had a stall alongside many other talented creatives!

The fair teamed up with Design MCR and GF Smith to offer fun print + paper workshops, lovely food + drink and live art - everything is totally free entry too! All of our products are printed onto GF Smith paper stock so it felt right for us to apply for a space at this ace event.

The atmosphere across the weekend was brilliant with a continual thriving flow of people discovering beautiful work and enjoying their weekend in the city!

We normally show at events within Yorkshire so it was lovely to step into new territory and meet some new faces over in the North West. We are looking forward to next year already!

We've moved! - New Plewsy HQ

Fiona Fawcett

we have made the move into a gorgeous new studio space!

October has been every bit as hectic as we had predicted, but with the move thrown into the mix we have been well and truly kept on our tip toes.

plewsy-new-studio-space

Since we launched in 2015 we have been working from a 'studio' at home but the logistics of storing stock vs finding some sort of a work/home life balance reached tipping point! We realised now was the time to start searching for that extra space we quickly needed.

plewsy-new-studio-space

Having read so many blogs and articles on finding the right space for you and your business, we headed off onto google! after viewing 5 or 6 different premises and crossing them off for various reasons, knowing that they weren't quite right, we decided to put the search on the back burner... when this little barn conversion popped up!

plewsy-new-studio-space

we have spruced the walls up with a lick of white emulsion, moved stock into the little store room, set up a packing area, done an ikea run and here we are! Very excited to say we are now working from the new Plewsy HQ on a daily basis.

Festival of Thrift 2016

Fiona Fawcett

last weekend saw the return of the wonderful Festival of Thrift - an annual event with a huge ever-growing following. having previously been located at lingfield point in darlington, this year the festival moved home to a lovely spacious site in kirkleatham, redcar.

in it's fourth year, the festival of thrift celebrates creative culture and encourages the region to recycle and upcycle! as winner of the 2015 observer ethical award, this fabulous event fits perfectly with the brand values of our own little business and this is why we have chosen to apply for stall here for the past two years!

^ image by festival photographer - Tracey Kidd Photography

^ image by festival photographer - Tracey Kidd Photography

throughout the year we exhibit at many lovely markets, shows and festivals but the message being spread by The Festival of Thrift is one that has drawn us back for two consecutive years! the weekend schedule was as ever jam packed with fun creative workshops, music + dance performances and many inspirational talks. where else could you go for a free day out with your friends and family to learn eco-friendly screen printing techniques, upcycle on a double decker bus or have your hair done 1950's style?!

Plewsy is so passionate about encouraging young ones to get amongst and involved in the creative world! we have previously talked alongside The Princes Trust and at Teesside University to inspire and encourage, and spread the word that with a little hard work you can achieve what you want to achieve (cliche and all that, but it's true!) something we absolutely love about the thrifty festival is there is zero stigma attached to being you! be who you want to be and be proud!

^ image by festival photographer - Tracey Kidd Photography

^ image by festival photographer - Tracey Kidd Photography

another lovely attribute of The Festival of Thrift is that they are exceptionally proud of their region! the North East does seem to get a bit of a battering at times, so it's great that this super thrifty weekend shouts proudly about being Northern and will always stay true to its roots. we have taken inspiration from this, searching long and hard for high quality suppliers who are located a little more local to us in Yorkshire. we have now moved our gift wrap printing to a printers leeds, making sure as always all of the paper our paper products are printed onto are eco-friendly and FSC accredited, made in mill in the Lake District. we continue to strive to find suppliers closer to our home in North Yorkshire and we reuse and source recycled packaging where ever possible!

we really can't reccommend this wonderful Northern festival enough! pop over to www.festivalofthrift.com for much more info and to find out the dates for next year!

5 Tips To Stay Motivated When Running Your Small Business

Fiona Fawcett
5 tips to stay motivated when running your small business

It can be super difficult at times to stay motivated when you are running your own small business. When you're used to being a very creative driven person and this wave of nothingness just swings by and smacks you right in the face, it's pretty frustrating!

Here are 5 tips to stay motivated when running your small business:

1. Be clear about why you are doing it

If you have a clear message in your head as to why you decided to do what you do, this will always help you stay motivated when running your small business.

There will be thousands of different reasons depending on who we are, where we are from, what stage of life we are at, but each of us will have our own individual message. It may be to fit around family life, to be able to draw for a living or maybe you have always dreamt of running your own business.

It's kind of like a goal but something that when you're having an off day, will continue to drive you forward, spark excitement and motivate you in the days, weeks and years to come!

5 tips to stay motivated when running your small business

2. Find out how you work best

Wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same! Maybe you're workspace is an organised mess or maybe you prefer your pencils lined up perfectly. You may scattily scribble random thoughts on a loose piece of paper or neatly write lines in a notebook. You may work most productively on a morning or maybe you're a night owl - there really is no right or wrong to how you work!

You just need to find out what works best for you and roll with it. This way you'll learn how you tick and really get the most out of yourself.

{ image from pinterest }

{ image from pinterest }

3. Plan your time { and your time out }

planning your time made such a humongous difference to how i work and how i feel. i generally plan out my week ahead on a sunday evening so I have a schedule of what i'll be working on that week, making sure i note down fitness classes, runs or coffee with pals too. this way you can set yourself maybe three achievable tasks per day, motivating yourself once you've ticked them off!

it's super easy to get caught up in the all work no play scenario when you're working for yourself, which sometimes leads to a lack of love for what you do! so be sure to organise a cup of tea and cake date or getting your nails done as a treat. you'll get the most out of yourself and your business if you love both equally!

4. Set SmART goals

i recently posted as part of the #Marchmeetthemaker instagram challenge how i set my goals. i find it really helpful to set small achievable smart goals. this way keeps me motivated as i know i am making progress and building my little brand.

s - specific
m - measurable
a - achievable
r - realistic
t - timely

obviously as i mentioned earlier, everyone works differently so maybe more hefty challenging smart goals would work for you but either way they should help you stay motivated when running your small business.

5 tips to stay motivated when running your small business

5. Be inspired

take time out to be inspired. this is one i struggle with as i often feel guilty for having a day out an about visiting a city, seeing lovely architecture and visiting a few galleries. it doesn't feel like you are working but essentially you are because how will you create an ace new collection or amaze a client with some brilliant work if you are totally uninspired and not feeling motivated?

maybe being outdoors in the countryside with your pooch, sitting for a coffee people watching through the glass outside or burying your head in a good book sparks exciting new ideas! whatever it is that keeps you motivated and passionate make sure you find time to do it!

Life lately | February

Fiona Fawcett

i definitely say this every month but... where did february go? i can't believe we are now in the third month of 2016 already!

february always feels a bit of a strange one for me; being the shortest month and still very much in those winter vibes of freezing cold short days and long nights. however this year has seen the sun shining into the studio and daffodils popping up early with Spring well and truly on it's way!

we were super excited to launch our new website in middle of the month! after a few technical issues pre christmas with our old site, we knew it was time for an update and to create a cohesive brand online. so thank you if you've fed back to us what you think, we love the new site and it should make it much easier for you to shop your favourite things!

we've also been getting the ball rolling on stand designs and layouts for our two trade shows this year. we'll be at Pulse and home & gift, with a brand new collection launch. it seems like two minutes since our first trade show last year! february also saw us kick off our retail shows, booking reetsweet for easter weekend! if you're around leeds at easter, pop by and say hello!

plewsy-work-space

we spent a weekend in lovely saltaire with the snow!

snowy saltaire

we booked a little cottage in the lakes for april/may!

portinscale keswick

we took part in the etsy resolution, a free four week programme to get the most out of your etsy shop. we've had our etsy shop open right from the beginning of plewsy, when it all started with six greetings cards! in all honesty we have never made the most of the opportunities that etsy has to offer, so it was an unmissable opportunity to learn a lot more about how to be much more productive and effective with our product listings! it also provided a great  online community to chat to other designer makers! thanks etsy!

we had a poorly pup at the beginning of the month, but still managed to get out into the sunshine for some winter walks! one of our favourites is around the easby abbey/richmond river loop, on which you pass our ace new stockist - the station at richmond - where you can now find plewsy cards and mugs!

we finished off february with a girlie trip to copenhagen, read more here!

5 fun things to do in Copenhagen

Fiona Fawcett

I've just got home from a lovely long Danish weekend away with the girls, so I thought I'd share 5 fun things to do in Copenhagen with you, just incase you are planning a trip!

colourful houses copenhagen
easyjet manchester to copenhagen

Copenhagen has a beautifully clean feel and is cram packed with a mix of classic Danish architecture and minimalistic design. We booked in an ace Airbnb apartment in the Frederiksberg area of the city, completely cladded with gorgeous vintage/retro pieces - you can check it out here { although the images don't really do it any justice! }

airbnb frederiksberg copenhagen

5 fun things to do in Copenhagen -

1. Hire bicycles!

we hired six rickety and quite rusty bicycles to get us around the city! it was so much fun and made it much easier to travel from place to place. there are separate cycle paths next to each of the roads which makes it safer if you're not usually a fan of bikes!

hire bicycles in copenhagen

2. Assistens cemetery

the assistens cemetery was founded in 1760 and makes a beautiful place to visit. you can wander or cycle around the different parts to visit hans christian andersen amongst other famous gravestones. the cemetery is in the Nørrebro area of the city.

hans christian andersen gravestone

3. Hay Design

i loved visiting the hay house store, full of gorgeous danish design; interiors and my love - stationery! it would have been so easy for me to spend hours here. hays ambition is to put danish design on the map and it sure is doing so!

IMG_2354.jpg

4. Christiansborg

christiansborg has a hippie community created within an abandoned army base. they have created an eerie area to live and most make a living from here too! although it's a touristy area they ask you not to photograph when you are walking through, but it is definitely worth a visit!

5. Colourful Houses

whenever I've thought of copenhagen in the past i've always thought of the beautiful colourful architecture! the colourful houses are located in nyhavn -  a stones throw from the main shopping area of the city, lining the canal and surrounded by restaurants. we cycled here, chained up our bikes, wandered and had lunch at 42raw. i noticed that the canals are very shallow and very clean - if you enjoy boats i'm sure a boat trip around the canals would be a great way to explore too!

colourful houses nyhavn copenhagen

if you have any foodie { veggie } tips on where to eat in the city that would be great, i'm sure i'll be planning another trip soon!

Life lately | January

Fiona Fawcett

i'm a little late in kicking off the life lately posts, sorry!

january seems so long ago now! i struggled with getting back into the swing of things after the christmas rush. in hindsight i piled far too much pressure on myself to jump straight back on the wagon and start ticking off major goals. i MUST remember these things take time! good things come to those who wait! { etc etc etc }

mainly january consisted of planning and making much more specific goals of where i would like to take my little business in 2016. i'm now feeling incredibly focussed and can't wait to drive plewsy in the focussed direction i'd like it to go!

lots fresh air and crisp winter walks with little noddy, deliciously ella ginger & honey tea and organising the studio were squeezed in too!

see you in feb!
